A Room So Quiet And Empty It Hurts: Reassessing Suicide Risk Assessment

This workshop is part of "A Mini Institute: Ethics and Treatment Strategies" Conference. CE credits o ered.
The focus of this workshop is the ABC model of suicide risk assessment: Aloneness, Burdensomeness, and Capacity for suicide. We will review the epidemiology of suicide and the evidence for the ABC Algorithm, the theories connected to this model, and the evidence that supports this approach to risk assessment. We will discuss and practice the use of summarizing, identifying the problem, cognitive exploration, and therapeutic interaction statements.

Join the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (@ABACoLAP) in a live Q&A Twitter conversation about the disproportionately high rate of suicides in the legal profession, symptoms or behaviors that might indicate a person may be considering attempting suicide, and how to get help or refer someone to help or treatment when a crisis occurs.

This seminar will provide participants with information about addiction and trauma interaction, treatment information based on best practices and recovery. Those who attend will leave with a better understanding of the problem, tools to stay afloat, and knowledge of how to keep your head above water when trauma and addiction is all around you.

ILAA 43rd Annual Meeting

The 2017 ILAA Annual Conference will take place in Kansas City, Missouri from October 20-22, 2017, at the Marriott Downtown.

The local host committee has lined up a great group of inspirational speakers and the program offers multiple recovery meetings. Saturday afternoon you can choose between a variety of excursions or enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends. The Saturday night banquet will celebrate recovery and recognize and honor those whose service to ILAA has been exemplary. Sunday morning we will close with a Spirituality Breakfast.
